"Exciting things" are coming to Starfield. That's the promise Bethesda made barely a month ago as it showcased verified content creator AlmightySE's Everbright Sanctum nod, which certainly seems cool, but the words were taken more broadly. A second expansion is en route, albeit probably not until next year. Minor updates will still occur. That much, we knew.

Now, we're getting a better idea of the scope of these new things. While many players have sort of receded into the belief that Starfield's second expansion will be the last noteworthy post-launch piece the divisively-received game will get, there's an increasing possibility that we, like humanity before we took to the stars in Bethesda's sweeping space opera, are simply thinking far too narrowly about Starfield's future.

Spotlight Time

To be clear here, we still don't really have details. But in a recent Bethesda Game Studios Developer Spotlight video, Starfield Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb was surprisingly forthcoming about the shape of things to come. Lamb expresses enthusiasm toward what the team's been working on, teasing "free updates and features the players have been asking for, as well as a new DLC story." The DLC story is almost certainly that aforementioned second major expansion, of course.

But this is where things get particularly interesting, especially in light of a datamine leak which revealed precisely what Lamb had to say next:

"I can't go into all the details just yet, but I will say part of the team has been focused on space gameplay to make the travels there more rewarding."

The leak, for the record, includes datamined code listed as "Cruise Mode". It's not the seamless space-to-surface seamless landing that many of us wanted - which, by the way, I spent over three hours attempting to achieve at launch only to fool like a complete fool afterward - but it should still make the overarching space travel system more engaging. Hopefully.

Lamb also mentions "interesting stuff coming down the pipe from our verified creators", for the record. But the general vibe from all of this is that Starfield still has some gas left in the starship tank beyond 'just' a big expansion. If nothing else, that's music to my friend Sam Hallahan's ears. Maybe yours, too?

You can check out the full Bethesda interview below, which includes Tim's history with the legendary developer. It's honestly pretty charming stuff.
